On Saturday, May 22, 1999, Chinooks New England! hosted a
Conformation Show Handling Workshop in preparation for the U.K.C.
Premier and the Chinook Specialty in June 1999. The workshop was
led by Carl Russell of Animal Behavioral Consultants in Windham,
Maine. Chinooks, with their people, who attended the workshop
included Hurricane Tracer with Tamara Clark, WoodsRunner Duncan
with Connie Jones, WoodsRunner Baby with Cindy
Packard-Robitaille, WoodsRunner Plato with Alan Robitaille, Rain
Mountain Rangeley Runner with Jessica Maurer, and WoodsRunner X
Baxter with Penthea Burns. Happily, we were also joined by
Gretchen and Neil Greenberg and 2 of their Louisiana Catahoula
Leopard Dogs, one of whom finished 1998 as the #2 Catahoula in
the country. They drove 3 hours to attend!
This training provided foundation level information about show
preparation, grooming, etiquette and handling techniques. Carl
also gave us plenty of chance to practice these techniques. He
offered great feedback in a fun and supportive way. (The
"locals" have grown to love receiving feedback from
Carl.) It was a hot day and many of the dogs and handlers took
occasional breaks in the shade. We laughed and learned together.
Ultimately, Carl promised to provide a follow-up training if we
promised to videotape our performance in the ring. He would
critique our technique and help us to improve even further. It's
a deal!
